World Out of Home Organization: Toronto 2020 Congress is cancelled, re-scheduled for June 2021

The World Out of Home Organization announces with regret that its planned Toronto Congress from June 3-5 is cancelled due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus and consequent travel restrictions.

The Congress is being rescheduled for Toronto in June 2021.

UK: Route updates currency to include digital spot measurement

Out-of-home audience research body Route is evolving its measurement system to include "spot level" ratings for ads played out on digital screens, after admitting to having "under-measured" them in the past. "This is a big sea change for the industry," Route general manager Euan Mackay said today during a launch event. "This is the start of the next chapter for out-of-home."

UK: XL Network: Ocean introduces next generation large format DOOH roadside network in key UK commuter cities

 

Premium digital out of home (DOOH) media owner Ocean Outdoor is launching the XL Network. Ocean’s next generation in super-sized, connected DOOH roadside screens is at least 1.5x times larger than a standard 48-sheet. Jaguar Land Rover is the launch partner with a campaign breaking across 13 of the screens in four cities (Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester) from Monday, March 9. The new campaign promotes the Range Rover Velar.

France: JCDecaux reports flat transport revenue in year of two halves; seeks and grants contract relief

JCDecaux’ s Transport arm posted a mixed year in 2019, with revenues for the subdivision up just +0.3% to €1,636.4 million (US$1,823 million). The world’s largest out of home advertising company, which was present in 167 airports during the year, said the non-renewal of its loss-making contract with AENA in Spain and a drop off in business in Hong Kong impacted revenue in the second half of the year.

USA: OOH Industry Supports CDC with National COVID-19 Prevention Campaign

 

OAAA has partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the nation’s health agency, to offer public-health PSAs in a variety of digital OOH formats as the OOH industry steps up to help explain preventive measures to mass audiences. Thousands of digital OOH units across the country are asking Americans to be diligent in washing their hands, staying home when ill, and to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.

USA: DSE 2020 Postponed To Fall

 

Digital Signage Expo has postponed the 2020 version of the show to September, still in Las Vegas. Dates and venue, I am told, are still to be locked down. “This was not an easy decision to make, but the escalation of travel bans and Coronavirus cases dictates this action,” Chris Gibbs, the President and COO of show organizer Exponation told me this morning.

USA: Out-of-Home (OOH) Specialist Billups Acquires MacDonald Media

Billups, the largest independent, privately-held advertising technology company in the U.S. specializing in OOH, has acquired MacDonald Media. Billups offers services including strategic planning, buying, printing and brand experiences and is headquartered in Portland, Oregon. The acquisition closely follows Billups’ purchase of Russ Media in late 2019. The company’s growing footprint now covers 16 U.S. markets and has nearly 120 employees.

USA: Watchfire, Blip and Greyline to Launch Programmatic Billboard in Times Square

 

Watchfire Signs, a leading manufacturer of digital billboards and LED displays, was selected by Greyline Outdoor to manufacture a large digital billboard located in Times Square, a major commercial, tourist and entertainment center in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York City. Click to Tweet. The 8mm billboard stretches nearly 36 ft x 24 ft and is located above US Polo at 1540 Broadway in the center of Times Square. Nearly 50 million visitors are drawn to this area annually.

Australia: Programmatic DOOH: Lessons from the European experience

Australian advertisers, agencies and publishers are embracing programmatic digital out-of-home (DOOH) in ever-increasing numbers, but structures and strategies need to be underpinned by data, Outdoor Media Association (OMA) independent chairman Charles Parry-Okeden warns in an interview with Broadsign. Once regarded as a relatively unaccountable medium, the OOH industry has made great strides in how audiences are measured, targeted and accounted for, he says, but more work needs to be done.

China: Shanghai's Pudong Airport Adds Massive LED Board In Departures Hall

 

This is a massive 178 sq. meter ad board at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, installed last year but just being touted now by LED manufacturer AOTO. The board is sold and presumably run by DOOH media giant JCDecaux.
